Goals app data limits and guardrails

Atlassian Goals includes built-in data limits and guardrails to help maintain a consistent and performant experience across all organizations. Understanding these limits can help you plan your goals structure, avoid unexpected errors, and get the most out of the app. This page outlines the key limits that apply to Goals in Atlassian cloud, along with best practices for working within them.

Goals

Item

Limit

Notes

Goal name length

256 characters

The maximum number of characters allowed in a goal's name or title.

Goal update length (summary)

280 characters

The summary text of a goal status update is limited to 280 characters to provide a brief overview to stakeholders. Use the More details field for longer updates.

Linked Jira work items per goal

100

A single goal can have a maximum of 100 Jira work items linked to it. There is no limit on linking other goals, projects, or teams.

Success measures per goal

20

A goal can have up to 20 success measures (e.g. key results). We recommend keeping this to 1-3 for clarity and focus.

Goal hierarchy depth

30 levels

Goals can be nested as sub-goals up to 30 levels deep (e.g. a sub-goal of a sub-goal of a sub-goal, and so on).

Goal types and workspace configuration

The maximum number of characters allowed in a goal type's name.

Goal type description length

1,024 characters

The maximum number of characters allowed in a goal type's description.

Only one Goals app can be provisioned per organization. If your organization has multiple sites, only one site can have the Goals app enabled.

Exports

Item

Limit

Notes

CSV export limit

1,000 goals per export

A single CSV export can include up to 1,000 goals. To export more goals, use filters (such as status, owner, or tags) to export goals in batches.

Best practices for working within limits

To get the most out of Atlassian Goals while working within these limits, we recommend:

  • Keep goal names concise: Aim for clear, descriptive titles well under the 1,024-character limit to improve readability in the goals directory.

  • Limit success measures: Aim for 1-3 success measures per goal. Too many can make it difficult to focus and report on progress.

  • Structure hierarchies thoughtfully: While goals support up to 30 levels of nesting, a flatter structure of 2 to 4 levels is generally easier to navigate and understand, and can better align with your organization’s structure.

  • Use goal types purposefully: With up to 20 goal types available, define only the types your organization actively needs (e.g. Company Goal, Team Goal, OKR Objective/Key Result).

  • Filter before exporting: When exporting large numbers of goals to CSV, use filters to keep each export under the 1,000-goal limit and to focus exports on specific teams, statuses, or time periods.
