Create and navigate tree view

Tree view helps you visualize ideas as a multi-level hierarchy and helps you understand how your work aligns with existing goals, opportunities, Atlassian projects, solutions, and experiments. This page explains how to create a tree view.

Before creating a tree view, make sure:

  • You are on the Jira Product Discovery Premium plan. Organization admins can check the subscription level in Atlassian Administration under Billing.

  • To set up the right idea types (for example, opportunities and solutions) and connection fields in your Jira Product Discovery space. The tree view will automatically build the hierarchy from these connections. Read how to configure ideas and hierarchies

Create a tree view

  1. Open your Jira Product Discovery space.

  2. From the navigation bar, select Views and then select + Add view.

  3. Select Tree as the view type.

  4. Enter a name for the view and select Create.

You are now ready to configure the hierarchy.

Configure the hierarchy

Each level of the tree represents a group of ideas connected to the level above it. You define the levels using idea types (such as, opportunities, solutions, or experiments) or fields (such as, goals or Atlassian projects).

  1. When you’re creating a new tree view, select Configure levels. Alternatively, you can also select Hierarchy. A sidebar will open.

  2. In the Levels section, select the fields or idea types you’d like to see in each level. You can select:

    • Goals: You can add goals only at the first level of the hierarchy.

    • One or more idea types: For example, select “opportunity” for Level 1 and “solution” for Level 2. You can include multiple types on a single level, but you can’t mix types and fields on the same level.

    • Atlassian projects: You can add Atlassian projects only at the last level of the hierarchy.

  3. Repeat for each level you want to display.

  4. Select + Add levels to add up to 10 levels.

  5. Select Save once you’re done.

Tree view uses all available connection fields in your project to connect levels. You don’t need to manually select which connection fields to use. The view detects them automatically.

Each idea type can only appear on one level. If you don’t see a connection between ideas, it means no connection field exists between those types.

Once your hierarchy is configured, the tree displays ideas as expandable cards connected by lines. You can:

  • Expand and collapse branches: Select the arrow next to a parent card to expand or collapse a branch.

  • Pan and zoom into the hierarchy: Use your mouse or trackpad to scroll through your tree, and use the zoom controls in the bottom-right corner to get a closer look at the cards. Select Zoom to fit to recenter the tree on your screen in case you get lost.

  • View card details: Select a card to open and view its details in a side panel.

  • Sort cards: Select Sort to sort cards by different categories.

  • Reorder cards: Reorder cards within a level by dragging a card up or down. You can only reorder cards within their current level. You can’t drag cards between levels or change their parent this way. If you uncheck the Show duplicate cards option, you will not be able to reorder cards.

  • Change display: In the Display settings, you can adjust card layouts, card size, and card colors.

  • Search: Use the search bar to search for specific cards.

External ideas in a different space, or in a space not included in the current roadmap, display only one level deep in the tree.
