What are skills?

Skills are capabilities, packaged as reusable instructions, that let Rovo Chat and agents carry out specific work-based actions. Where Rovo is the conversation, skills are the concrete things it can do — like creating work items, drafting status updates, or analyzing incident data. They are, ostensibly, a skill set you invoke so that Rovo can perform tasks in apps on your behalf — be it via chat, an agent, or an automation.

Skills are different from Ask Rovo writing helpers like Add polish, Fix spelling & grammar, Change tone, or Adjust length that you might see in Confluence. Those helpers use AI to rewrite what you’ve already typed. Skills perform tasks in your Atlassian apps, often in places other than where you are currently working.

A skill can be created by Atlassian, third-party partners, or your own organization, but they only appear in your skills directory once it’s approved and enabled for your site. This includes MCP tools — the third-party skills Rovo can perform once you connect an associated third-party MCP server.
