What are team types?

Team types are specific designations given to teams by an organization admin. Team types can be used for a variety of reasons, such as better categorization, creating team structures, and managing settings and permissions.

Membership controls are handled at the type level, with two different options:

  • Team types managed by its members

    • These types can be either closed (members invite new members or approve requests to join) or open (anyone in the organization can join).

  • Team types managed by organization admins

    • These teams are marked as “verified” with a blue checkmark icon.

Note: only the default Teams team type can be managed by members. All newly created team types will be managed by organization admins and verified by default.

Teams managed by members

These are your standard team types at Atlassian that anyone in an organization can create. These teams have two membership configurations that the creator can select:

  • Open membership - anyone in the organization can join and make changes to the team.

  • Closed membership - people must be invited by an existing member or request to join the team. Any member can approve a request to join the team.

Once a team has been created, members of these teams can add or remove other members, change team details, and edit the team profile.

At present, there is only one team type available that can be managed by its members that is simply called Teams. In order to give everyone the flexibility to use and collaborate with teams, this team type cannot be deleted but it can be renamed. In the future, when more team types that are managed by members can be created, there will always need to be at least one member-managed team type available.

Teams managed by admins

These team types ensure protected membership and details as they can only be managed by means accessible to organization admins. Because these teams have an added layer of protection and accuracy, these team types are verified and have a blue checkmark indicator in most places they are shown.

Currently, teams become managed by admins and will be assigned to the default team type Official teams by:

Any new team types created by an admin are verified and admin-managed by default.

Default team types

Note: organization admins can remove and rename these team types, so the types you see in your organization may differ.

Every organization will start out with two default team types:

  • Teams

  • Official teams

As described above, Teams are the default team type for teams created and managed by anyone in the organization. Official teams will account for any of the admin-managed teams described above.

Example type usage

As an organization admin, you may find it useful to distinguish between HRIS-synced teams and teams synced to groups. You could rename Official teams to Reporting line teams and create a new type for group-synced teams, such as Group-synced teams. This would give better clarity into which teams represent actual reporting lines for management in your organization vs users in groups that are used to give access or permissions to specific pages in Atlassian.

Managing your team types

As an organization admin, you can configure the different team types used in your organization from the Teams app settings page.

From this page, you can:

  • Create new team types

  • Edit existing team types

  • Delete team types

Creating a new team type screen

Create a new team type

  1. From the Team types settings page, select Create type.

  2. Enter a name and short description for your team type. The description will primarily be used when creating new teams of that type.

  3. Select Save to finish creating your new team type.

Edit an existing team type

  1. From the Team types settings page, find the type you want to change and select Edit.

  2. Make any changes to the team type you would like. Currently, you can only rename or change the description.

  3. Select Save to apply your changes to the team type.

Delete an existing team type

  1. From the Team types settings page, find the type you want to delete and select Edit.

  2. Select the button in the top right section of the edit screen.

  3. Select Delete type.

Things to note when deleting a type:

  • Once the type is deleted, all teams of that type will automatically be reassigned to another type with similar configurations.

  • Note that there must always be at least one member-managed type and one admin-managed type in an organization.

  • It may take up to an hour for the deletion to be reflected on the types page.
