Manage project and global fields from your project

In your project, field management is centralized under Project settings. From this page, you can add and remove global custom fields and hide system fields.

Create a new project-scoped field

Steps

  1. In your discovery project, go to Project settings > Fields.

  2. Click Create field.

  3. Select the type of field you want to create and click Create.

  4. Add the details.

This field will now be available in the project.

Add a global field to your project

Global fields can be reused across projects. For more information, check Create and manage global fields.

Steps

  1. In your discovery project, go to Project settings > Fields.

  2. Click Add global field and find the field you want to add to the project.
All - Lists all global custom fields available on the site.
Discovery - Lists global fields created in the Jira Product Discovery global field page.
Jira - Lists global fields from other Jira products.

  3. Check the details of the select field, and click Add field.

Global fields can only be created and edited from the global field page. A jira admin can click Global fields → to access this page

Migrate values from a project field to a global field

To replace an existing project field with a new global field, you can copy its values into the new global field. When copying a project field value, the different values added to a field will be copied into the new global field across all ideas for this project.

Before you begin

  • You must be a project admin to copy field values to global fields.

  • You can copy values between two fields of the same type.

  • The global field needs to be added to the project.

Steps

  1. In your discovery project, go to Project settings > Fields.

  2. Select an existing project field and click , or create a new field.

  3. Once you've selected the field you want to copy into a global field, go to the bottom of the field panel and click Copy values.

  4. Select the global field where you want to copy the values or create a new one, and then click Copy values. You can now see values under the global field for all ideas under this project.

Tip
Once you have copied values and your global field has been populated, you can replace your project field with the global field in your views. You can then eventually retire the project field to avoid confusion.

Remove fields from a project

Before you begin

Beware that removing fields from a project might impact views:

  • When a project field is deleted, values get lost.

  • If you remove (not delete) a global field from the project, it still exists at the site level and in other projects.

  • System fields cannot be deleted nor removed, only be hidden in views.

Steps

  1. In your discovery project, go to Project settings > Fields > Project.

  2. Select the field you want to delete and confirm the action.

Hide system fields

Project admins can now hide system fields that aren’t in use in their Jira Product Discovery projects.

To hide system fields:

  1. Select Project settings > Fields.

  2. Pick a system field of your choice and then click

  3. Click (eye) icon > Hide.
