Setting up Jira Data Center for instance optimization

Jira Data Center Optimization helps you monitor and optimize your Jira Data Center instance. This guide will walk you through the setup process.

General prerequisites

• You need system administrator permissions for Data Center instances.

• Works with any supported Jira Data Center version.

Install Cloud companion app

To install the Cloud companion app:

1. Go to Administration > Manage apps in your Jira Data Center instance.

2. Select Find new apps.

3. Search for Cloud companion.

4. Select Install to add it to your instance.

Update the Atlassian Troubleshooting and Support Tools (ATST) plugin

To update the ATST plugin:

1. Go to Administration > Manage apps in your Jira Data Center instance.

2. Search for "Atlassian Troubleshooting and Support Tools".

3. If an update is available, select Update next to the plugin name.

4. You'll see a confirmation message once the update is complete.

Note: If there's no update option, your ATST plugin is likely on the latest version.

Configure JMX and In-Product Diagnostics (IPD) monitoring

To configure JMX and In-product diagnostics:

1. Go to Administration > System.

2. In the left-side panel, go to System Support, and select Monitoring.

3. Toggle Enable JMX monitoring.

4. Toggle on IPD monitoring.

Configure network access

To enable data transmission between your Data Center instance and Atlassian cloud:

1. Configure the allowlist in Jira:

   1. Go to Administration > System > Allowlist.

   2. Add the https://api.atlassian.com domain.

2. Configure your firewall:

   • Create a new rule to allow TCP connection to api.atlassian.com on port 443.

Create or use an Atlassian cloud organization

You'll need an Atlassian cloud organization to use Data center optimization in Portfolio insights.

You can either:

Use an existing organization:

1. Go to https://admin.atlassian.com.

2. Sign in with your Atlassian account.

3. Select your organization if you have multiple.

Or create a new organization:

1. Open https://admin.atlassian.com/o/create in your web browser

2. Sign up or sign in with your Atlassian account

3. Enter your organization name and select Create.

You'll see a pop-up about a free trial of Guard. This subscription is entirely optional and not required for optimization features.

Enable data sending to cloud

To enable data transfer:

1. Go to Administration > System > Troubleshooting and Support tools.

2. Select the Optimization tab.

3. Toggle on Enable sending data to cloud

You're now ready to use Portfolio insights.

Connect your Jira Data Center instance to start automatic data collection and enable optimization insights.
