Confluence pages affecting migration time

This insight checks whether your total number of pages is higher than the median migration rate per 24 hours, and provides an estimated migration time. If you have more pages than the median rate, it's likely that your migration will take longer than 24 hours.

How do pages affect migration time?

The migration assistant’s throughput has its limits. The median migration rate (based on all migrations we’ve observed in the past 3 months) is 400,000 pages per 24 hours. If you try to migrate more pages than that, it’s likely that your migration will take longer than 24 hours.

Note that this rate is a median and might also be affected by other factors. You should treat this number as a suggestion – depending on your environment, you might achieve a higher or lower rate.

What’s the recommendation?

If the 24-hour (or any fixed) downtime is what you’re looking for, your goal is to reduce the number of pages you migrate in a single migration plan. You can achieve that by migrating pages at different times, and in different plans.

For example, by:

  • Pre-migrating inactive spaces

  • Pre-migrating personal spaces

  • Dividing the migration of remaining spaces into different phases

Pre-migrate inactive spaces

To pre-migrate inactive spaces:

  1. Open the migration assistant by going to Administration > General configuration > Migration Assistant.

  2. Create a new migration plan.

  3. Follow the steps in the wizard until you access the screen where you can choose what to include in your migration.

  4. Open the Spaces card where you can select the spaces to migrate.

  5. Use the Last edited filter to show only inactive spaces. The exact time depends on how many spaces you want to migrate in a single go. In general, not updated for 24 months is a good choice.

  6. Use Select all to select all of these spaces, and then Add to migration.

Checking the number of spaces and pages

In the next step, on the Review your migration screen, you'll see the number of spaces and pages you added to this migration plan. This will be useful to understand how many pages you pre-migrated and removed from the total that was shown in Portfolio insights.

  4. Open the Spaces card where you can select the spaces to migrate.

  5. Use the Space type filter to choose only personal spaces, like on the screenshot below.

  6. Use Select all to select all of these spaces, and then Add to migration.

Divide migration into phases

For larger instances, a multi-phased migration strategy might be beneficial, dividing the total number of pages into manageable chunks.
