Add skills to Rovo agents

Rovo agents use tools (individual actions) and skills (reusable, multi-step instructions) to get work done.

Understand the difference between skills and tools

This page explains how to add skills to your agent, and what to expect when using them. Read more about how to add tools to Rovo agents

Get to know skills

Skills tell an agent how to approach a specific type of task. They orchestrate tools with reasoning to get work done consistently.

Here are some Atlassian-built skills you can add to your agents:

Skill

Description

Write PRD

Drafts a product requirements document as a Confluence page. Asks for a feature description, scope, and audience, then generates a structured PRD with goals, user stories, requirements, and success metrics.

Create work items

Creates Jira work items from a description, a link, or a conversation. Handles space selection, work types, field validation, and parent/child hierarchy.

Write status update

Gathers recent activity from a Jira space, board, or Atlassian project and writes a concise status update summarizing progress, blockers, and next steps.

Create action plan

Reads meeting notes and produces a Confluence page with decisions, action items, owners, and open questions.

Write how-to article

Transforms a resolved Jira Service Management ticket into a publishable knowledge base article in Confluence, tailored for either internal or external audiences.

Draft release notes

Pulls work items from a Jira release and drafts formatted release notes summarizing what shipped.

Summarize incident

Reads an incident in Jira Service Management and produces a structured summary with timeline, impact, and resolution details.

Add skills to your agent

To add a skill to your agent:

  1. Navigate to Studio using the App switcher ()

  2. Select your agent's Details from the side bar.

  3. Review and select Edit to make changes.

  4. Navigate to Skills, and select Add skills.

  5. Select Read on any skill card to preview its instructions and the tools it requires.

  6. Select the skills you want to include.

  7. Select Add.

You don't need to manually add a skill's required tools.

When you add a skill, the required tools are automatically added. You can find the required tools for any skill by selecting Read on the skill card.

Automatically added tools won't appear in the agent's Tools section.

What to expect when you chat with an agent

Simply ask the agent to help with a task the same way you might ask your teammate. For example:

  • Create a work item in Jira about writing a research summary

  • Create a Confluence page named ‘My week in summary’

  • Move this work item to the In progress status

  • Prepare a status update for my team

Some tools have limitations or have required fields you'll need to provide the agent. For example:

  • Bulk actions in Jira are currently limited to 20 work items at a time.

  • Creating work items in Jira will sometimes require additional input from you if there are required fields.

  • Calendar invites created with an agent are limited to four attendees at once.

The agent will respond asking for confirmation before executing consequential tools that may mutate data across systems.

Agent permissions

Tools and skills always respect the permissions of the person using the agent.

An agent can only access information and perform actions that you already have permission to do. If you can't view a Confluence page or edit a Jira work item, neither can the agent acting on your behalf.

This applies to both Atlassian and third-party tools.
