Update your Atlassian account email addresses

Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian apps on the cloud platform.

Summary

Learn how to update the email associated with your Atlassian account. Or, as an organization admin of a verified domain, see how you can update the email address for managed users in your Atlassian cloud organization.

Accounts managed with Atlassian Guard

These steps don't apply to managed accounts that use user provisioning or Google Workspace Integration.

Solution

User-created content, product access, and permissions are associated with the Atlassian account ID, not the email address. Any content created with an Atlassian account remains with that account even after the email update.

Check if the account is managed or unmanaged

The steps vary depending on whether you are using an Unmanaged or Managed Atlassian account and whether the new email address is already associated with an existing account.

  1. Go to id.atlassian.com/manage-profile/email.

    1. If the account is managed, you will see a pop-up saying, "Managed account - Your account is managed. Contact your administrator to change your email address."

    2. Your account is unmanaged if you can see the field to update your email.

Update the email of your unmanaged account

If you sign up using a third-party account (for example, using Google or Microsoft), you need to set a password on your Atlassian account before you can update your account email address.

  1. Go to id.atlassian.com/manage-profile/email.

  2. Enter the new email address.

  3. Save changes.

  4. Check the inbox of the new email address to find the verification message.

  5. Select Verify your email and follow the instructions to complete the update.

Log in with a third-party account after an email update

After having your new email verified, if you log in with a third-party account and:

  • The email for your third-party account now matches your Atlassian account. Continue logging in with your third-party account.

  • The third-party account doesn't match Atlassian account - Click Continue.

  • You log in with a different third-party account that matches the new email on your Atlassian account - Log out of your last-used third-party account before logging into Atlassian again.

Can't change unmanaged user's email address due to email address already in use

If the email address you enter is already used in Atlassian, you will be notified that we can't change the email.

If you've been notified that you can't change an email because it's already used in Atlassian:

  1. Log in to the account associated with the desired email address and change its email address to another one (a third email address).

    1. The desired email address must be released from the existing Atlassian account to be used on the original account.

    2. This other email address must be something accessible: either a personal account or an email alias.

  2. You will receive an email from Atlassian in your mailbox.

    1. Finish the email verification and update this other email address. Doing so will fully release the desired email address.

  3. Log back into the original Atlassian account and change its email address to the desired one (now available).

  4. A verification email will be sent to the new email address; complete the verification step to complete the email update.

Update the email of a managed account

If your account is marked as managed, your email domain is verified. Only your organization’s admin can update your email address. Contact them for help.

Update the email of a managed account (admins only)

You can only update an email address if the new email address also belongs to a domain you have verified for your organization. If you’re unable to verify the domain, let the user know they can create a new Atlassian account with that email address.

A note to organization admins

  • If your organization uses Atlassian Guard with single sign-on, presuming that your managed users have logged in at least once with their old email address, changes to your user's email addresses first need to be made within your identity provider (IdP) so that when the user logs into Atlassian with their new email address, their account will be Just-in-Time updated with the new address.

  • If the user's original Atlassian account is not linked with your IdP (for example they did not log in at least once via their old email address) a new/duplicate Atlassian account will be created with the user's new/desired email address; follow the above steps if a user's new/desired email address has been associated with a new/duplicate Atlassian account and both Atlassian accounts are managed within the same Atlassian organization.

  1. Go to Atlassian Administration. Select your organization if you have more than one.

  2. Click Directory > Managed accounts.

  3. Select a user to open the Managed accounts page.

  4. Click the email address field and enter the updated email address.

Email is already in use with another managed account in same Organization

  1. Go to the the admin hub.

  2. Go to your organization's Managed accounts page.

  3. Locate the new/duplicate account with the desired email address, and change that account's email address to something else.

    1. This temp/proxy email address must be within your verified domains.

    2. This will release the desired email address for a different account.

  4. Locate the user's original account and change its email address from the old email address to the desired one.

    1. After updating the user's original account to the desired email, you can delete or deactivate the new/duplicate account.

Change the email of unmanaged account to a new address that's both managed and associated with an existing account

  1. Go to the the admin hub.

  2. Go to your Atlassian organization's Managed accounts page.

  3. Locate the new/duplicate account with the desired email address, and change that account's email address to something else.

    1. This temp/proxy email address must be within your verified domains.

    2. This will release the desired email address for a different account.

  4. Have the user log in to id.atlassian.com with their old/original email address.

  5. Go to https://id.atlassian.com/manage-profile/email

  6. Change their email address from the old email address to the desired one.

  7. A verification email will be sent to the desired email address; selecting the link will open a new window where the user must input the password associated with the old account to complete the change.

Notes to organization admins:

  • If your organization uses Atlassian Guard with single sign-on and managed users have previously logged in with their old email address, you must update their email address in your identity provider first. When users next log in with their new email, Atlassian will automatically update their account via Just-in-Time provisioning.

    • If the user's original account is not linked with your IdP (for example, they did not log in at least once with their old email address) a new/duplicate account will be created with the user's new/desired email address; follow the above steps if a user's new/desired email address has been associated with a new/duplicate Atlassian account and both Atlassian accounts are managed within the same organization.
