What happens when a watcher has the access revoked?

Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian products on the cloud platform.

Summary

Confluence has the functionality to allow users to add themselves as watchers of pages and spaces so notifications will be sent when pages get edited and published. While this function helps on keeping everyone updated on changes, you might have some questions on what happens with the "watcher" status when these users get the access revoked:

  • Will these users still receive notifications?

  • Will these users still be included in the list of watchers?

Solution

Answer

Although space admins can manually add and remove watchers, as soon as the user has the site access and product access revoked, it will automatically remove the user from the list of watchers for pages and spaces, avoiding any unnecessary effort on clearing it. It also happens when a managed account gets deactivated or deleted as it will revoke the site access as well.

ℹ️ As soon as the user is re-added with access to the application, the user will be automatically re-added to the pages and spaces that were previously watched.
