Clarifying roles: Automation rule actor vs. owner in Atlassian Automation

Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian apps on the cloud platform.

Summary

What is the difference between the automation rule actor and the automation rule owner?

Solution

Owner

The automation rule owner is the user who creates the rule. The rule owner will be notified via email when the rule throws an error.

To bulk transfer the rule's ownership, refer to this document on Transferring Jira automation rules from one user to another.

Actor

The automation rule actor is the actual user who performs/executes the action defined in the rule. Currently, we don't have an option to bulk edit the rule actors, so updating them requires manual intervention in each rule.

The automation rule actor must have the necessary project permissions, as described in Manage project permissions, to perform work item-related executions like edit, comment, update, etc.
