"Filter for this gadget could not be retrieved" error in Jira Dashboard

Summary
A dashboard gadget is not displaying and shows an error message:
The filter configured for this gadget could not be retrieved. Please verify it is still valid on the issue navigator.
Solution
Change the filter from private to a different sharing level
Identify the filter used for the gadget. Then, ask the filter's owner to change it from Private to another option.
If the filter is set to Private, only the owner of the filter can alter the sharing level of the filter and data
If the owner is no longer available, use the Manage filters functionality to change ownership of the filter
Go to ⚙ Settings > System > Filters
Locate the filter in question, then select ... (More options) > Change owner
If the filter is deleted, create a new filter query.
