Linking Your Bitbucket Cloud Workspace to an Atlassian Organization

Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian apps on the cloud platform.

Summary

Bitbucket Cloud is moving to a new billing platform and retiring the old billing system (Calling on all workspace Admins - Connect your Bitbucket workspace to an Atlassian organization). To keep your Bitbucket Cloud workspace running smoothly, you must link it to an Atlassian organization by 15 March 2026. This date is a deadline to complete the linking step—it is not the date your workspace will be migrated.

Starting 16 Mar 2026, for all eligible paid team workspaces (see how to check eligibility below) that haven't been linked to an organization, we will be automatically creating a new organization and linking these workspaces to that new organization.

This article explains of how to link your Bitbucket workspace to an Atlassian organization.

Solution

Required role: You must be both a Bitbucket workspace admin (on the workspace that is being linked) and an Atlassian organization admin (for the organization that is being linked to).

  1. Go to https://admin.atlassian.com/ and select the correct Atlassian organization. NOTE: Once the workspace is linked, it cannot be unlinked or transferred to another organization by an admin - so it is crucial that the correct organization is chosen. In rare occasions the Atlassian team may be able to unlink the workspace from an organization, but this is not guaranteed.

  2. In the left nav, click Apps, or under Apps, click Atlassian apps.

  3. In the upper-right corner, click the “…” (More) menu and select Link Bitbucket.

  4. On the next screen, click Next.

  5. Choose the Bitbucket workspace.

  6. Verify the selected workspace. Click the Link to complete.

  7. On the Apps / Atlassian apps page, refresh the view. Confirm your Bitbucket workspace appears in the app list for that organization.

If you are a Bitbucket workspace admin, but not an Atlassian organization admin. You have two options to configure.

  1. Ask to become an organization admin

  2. Add your organization admin as a workspace admin (steps below)

    1. In Bitbucket, go to Workspace settings.

    2. Click User groups.

    3. Select the group that has the Admin lozenge (this is the workspace admin group).

    4. Click Add members (top‑right).

    5. Enter the user’s email address (or multiple emails to invite several admins).

    6. Click Confirm.

The invited user(s) will receive an email invitation to join the workspace as admin. They must Accept the invitation, and then Follow the steps as in section one.

FAQs

How to check eligibility?

Only workspaces that are eligible to be linked will appear in the list under ‘Select a workspace to link’. If your workspace isn’t listed, it’s not yet eligible. Don’t worry—you’ll receive a notification when it becomes eligible.

How to check if your company already has an Atlassian organization?

  1. Go to https://admin.atlassian.com/.

  2. Sign in with your Atlassian account.

  3. Review what you see:

    • If one or more organizations are listed, your company already has at least one Atlassian organization.

    • If you are prompted:

      • You can take the tour or close it.

      • On the Atlassian Guard Standard screen, you can start a trial or click X to skip.

  4. If needed, create a new organization from this interface.

  5. Once the organization is created, use the steps in How to link a Bitbucket workspace (you are org admin + workspace admin) to link your workspace to it.

When will my workspace appear in the list?

Only workspaces that are eligible to be linked will appear in the Select a workspace to link list in the wizard. If your workspace does not appear, it is not yet eligible. You will receive a notification from Atlassian when it becomes eligible.

For organizations that are still on separate (original) user management across cloud products, you can track Atlassian’s progress toward unified user management via the public feature request linked from the Community article: Calling on all workspace Admins - Connect your Bitbucket workspace to an Atlassian organization

Is linking my workspace mandatory?

Yes. Link your Bitbucket workspace to an Atlassian organization to continue using Bitbucket Cloud under the new billing platform. Deadline: 15 March 2026. Acting early ensures uninterrupted access and enables upcoming enhancements.

What happens if I don’t link my workspace?

If your workspace isn’t linked by 15 March 2026: Atlassian will create an organization for you (if you don’t already have one). Your Bitbucket workspace will be linked automatically.

Note: 15 March 2026 is a linking deadline only

No users, groups, or other workspace data will be migrated on that date, and there should be no functional change for users at that time.

If my company has multiple Atlassian organizations, which should I choose?

For centralized management, Atlassian recommends linking your workspace to the organization that already serves as your primary hub for products like Jira Cloud and Confluence Cloud, has existing integrations with Active Directory or your identity provider (IdP) for user management, and is home to your Jira–Bitbucket integrations (where commits, branches, and pull requests are linked to Jira issues). Consolidating products under one organization simplifies user and billing administration, unlocks Atlassian AI capabilities powered by the Atlassian Teamwork graph, and makes day‑to‑day admin work significantly easier.

Will linking affect Bitbucket features or user access?

No. Linking your workspace to an Atlassian organization does not remove any Bitbucket features and does not reduce user access.

What is an Atlassian organization admin?

Within an Atlassian organization, admins can have multiple admin roles (e.g. organization admin, site admin, product admin). For details, see Atlassian Support: What are the different types of admin roles? | Atlassian Support

What are the benefits of linking my workspace?

Workspaces linked to an Atlassian organization can benefit from the following:

  1. Centralized user management across Atlassian Cloud.

  2. A unified billing experience (see Atlassian’s billing blog on Support).

  3. Rovo Dev AI capabilities to streamline development.

  4. Ability to set up Rovo Dev Agents.

  5. The upcoming Bitbucket Packages feature, including:

    1. Support for Docker images via a built‑in container registry.

    2. Storage, management, and deployment of containerized applications directly from Bitbucket Cloud.

    3. Reduced reliance on third‑party container registries.

  6. Ability to install Forge apps (workspaces not linked to an org cannot install Forge apps).
