Work item field limits in Jira Cloud

Summary

Jira Cloud limits the number of values allowed for certain fields within each work item.

Solution

Field limits are not configurable

This limit applies to all kinds of work items in both company-managed and team-managed projects, and is not configurable. An error response will occur if the limit is exceeded. This includes:

• Create or Update REST APIs

• Automation rules

• Transitions

Limits that apply per work item

Each work item can have up to:

Enforced from September 2025

• 2000 attachments

• 2000 remote links

• 2000 work item links (excluding child issues and subtasks)

• 5000 comments

• 10,000 worklogs

Enforced from September 2026

• 50,000 watcher

• 50,000 voters

• 25 MB any previously-unbounded work item field

The 25 MB limit applies to fields that previously had no size cap, including:

• Remote issue link text values (summary, URL, icon URL, icon title, status description, status icon URL)

• Plain text and URL custom fields (not rich text)

• Other unbounded string values (for example: sprint name, state, goal; SLA-related fields; Approvals-related fields)

Fields that already have a limit are not affected, most notably the 1 MB cap on individual rich-text entries (description, comments, worklogs, and rich-text custom fields).
