What users are suggested when you Add People to a Jira project?

Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian products on the cloud platform.

Summary

Inside the "Add People" window in Jira Cloud projects, users may encounter multiple suggestions. Suggestions fall into two categories:

  • Existing users

  • Email address suggestions for new users

This can cause confusion when trying to add users to a project.

Solution

Suggestion types in the Add People window

The first suggestion type is existing users. This type includes only users who are already present on the site. Existing users appear in the dropdown with their profile picture and name only. No email address is listed for existing users.

The second type is Suggestions for New Users. This type appears as an email address generated based on the name you typed. Underneath the suggested email address is a note stating "select an email address" to indicate that this is an invitation suggestion. This feature is designed to help you invite new users to your project.

The generated email will include a domain name based on your own user's email domain. For example, if your Atlassian account was created under a gmail.com email address, searching for a non-existent user "Jane Doe" will return the suggestion like this:

janedoe@gmail.com Select an email address

Here's an example of what an Email Suggestion looks like in the Add people window:

The add people window suggests an email address based on the searched name and your own email domain
