Resolve Transition Rule Warnings in Jira Team-managed Project Workflows

Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian products on the cloud platform.

Summary

The transition rule to Update an issue field of a workflow in a Team-managed project contains a warning.

Workflow diagram, the transition to the In Progress status (marked with a red rectangle) shows a warning symbol. In the sidebar we see a function with the warning as well.

Environment

Any cloud sites with Team-managed projects.

Diagnosis

  1. Create a Custom field in the Team-managed project of the required type.

  2. Add 'Update an issue field' rule to any of the transitions to update the created field.

  3. Update the created rule.

A warning is observed once the new rule is saved against the transition.

⚠️ You may save this workflow without resolving the following warnings, but your project may misbehave.

Cause

This warning is observed when we are updating a field or option that isn't present in all the issue types in the project that share the same workflow.

  • This may lead to unexpected behaviour when performing that transition in those issue types.

Solution

You can follow either of the below workarounds to mitigate the warning.

  1. Add the field to the other issue types.

Ensure to add the field you are updating in the rule to all the issue types that share the same workflow.

    Or

  2. Split the workflow by saving it to the issue types that have that field.
