Using the Windows installer to install Mysql 5.5 causes installation errors

Note that this KB was created for the Data Center version of the product. Symptoms

If users hit this bug they won’t be able to use the mysql command line client to create the database. It occurs on both Windows 2003 and 2008 systems.

Cause

There is a bug in MySQL (with only the installer 5.5.27.2) where it didn’t select or produce a my.ini file. This file is needed to for the mysql command line client or to create a database and user for JIRA.

Resolution

  • Apply all the Windows Updates;

  • Browse through mysql-server-5.5 folder (under the MySQL installation folder) and copy one of the default config files to my.ini;
