Symptoms

The user avatar is missing in activity stream, user profile especially after upgrade.

Cause

  • The avatar was missing in the JIRA Home Directory especially after JIRA migration.

  • The User running the JIRA process does not have appropriate permissions on the JIRA Home Directory.

  • The Gravatar feature was automatically turned on following an upgrade from earlier versions of JIRA to JIRA 5.1 and above.

Workaround

  • Copy the JIRA-HOME/data from your old instance to new instance if you performing migration earlier.

  • If the directory is there, make sure that the User that executes JIRA has the Read/Write permission on JIRA-HOME/data/ and sub-directories.

  • Proceed to Administration > System > General Configuration > Use Gravatar for user avatars and turn off the feature.
