Unable to start JIRA due to configured jira.home must not be a parent directory of the webapp servlet path

Symptoms
Unable to start JIRA.
The following appears in the atlassian-jira.log
:

Configured jira.home '/opt/atlassian/jira' must not be a parent directory of the webapp servlet path '/opt/atlassian/jira/jira-5.2.6/atlassian-jira'.
Cause
The JIRA Home Directory path must be separate from the JIRA Installation Directory path.
ℹ️ In the above example the JIRA Home Directory is the parent directory of the JIRA Installation Directory.
Resolution
Separate the <jira-home> and <jira-install> paths.
