Unable to search or filter search results when a custom field has context configured.

Summary
When performing a basic JQL search in the issue navigation screen, a custom field is not selectable with the following message:"<custom field name> is not applicable for the current project and/or issue type."

Cause
When searching in JQL basic it doesn't allow to search a field that has context applied to a sub-set of issue types if the option "Type" is set to All.

Solution
In order to perform a basic JQL search for a custom field with context, the search has to be filtered manually.
Based on this context, this custom field is only available in the story issue type in a project called Project A.
