"Don't have permission to access board based on its filter" error in Jira

Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian products on the cloud platform.

Summary

When attempting to view a Jira board you see the following error:

"You can't access this board. You don't have permission to access this board based on its filter. To access this board, update the filter's owner and permissions."

Solution

Confirm filter ownership and permissions

  1. Select the View filter option below the error

  2. Check the filter Owner and whether the filter is marked as Private in the Viewers column

If the filter is Private, you will not be able to view it, or any of the boards that use it. The viewership of the filter must be set to Public in order for the board to be viewable.

Request the owner edit the filter permissions

The filter owner will be listed on the page mentioned above. You can request that this user update the filter view permissions by following the documentation: Manage filters - Update permissions of a filter.

Note: The user must already have the Share dashboards and filters global permission in order to make their filter public.

Take over filter ownership and update visibility

As a Jira administrator, you can also update the filter's visibility without asking its current owner.

  1. Select ... (More actions) > Change owner

  2. Enter your own username and select Change Owner

  3. Navigate to the filter via the linked Filter Name

  4. Select Filter details > Edit permissions

  5. In the Update filter modal that opens, choose Public from the Viewers dropdown selector

The filter is now public and you will able to access the boards where it is used.
