Time remaining not updating after changing original estimate in Jira Cloud

Summary

Learn why 'Time Remaining' doesn't update after changing 'Original Estimate' in Jira Cloud.

Current Functionality

According to the current design, the "Time Remaining" field is intended to update based on the "Original Estimate" only before any work is logged. Once work is logged, the "Time Remaining" becomes independent of the "Original Estimate" and is instead calculated based on the time logged.

Previously, the Original Estimate and Time Remaining fields remained in sync. If the Original Estimate is changed after it is first entered, the Time Remaining will also change. However, once time is logged or if Time Remaining was manually updated, this sync no longer occurred; that is, the Time Remaining showed no change when the Original Estimate was updated.

Solution

The suggested workaround

  1. Don't setup the Original Estimate time when creating the issue/ Work Item, and update it after the issue/ Work Item is created.

  2. Create and use an Automation rule. You can find the details of the rule in the feature request below:

    1. Time remaining should change based on changes made to Original estimate
