Story points not showing in custom board for a team-managed Jira project

Summary

After creating a custom board to view work from a team-managed project, reports on that board don't show story points or burndown information correctly.

This is distinct from viewing reports on the board that is automatically created with your team-managed project.

Solution

Estimation statistics on custom boards vs team-managed boards

In a team-managed project, the estimation statistic that is used on reports is the story point estimate.

When you create a custom board, such as one that lives on a user's profile, the board generally has the configuration of a company-managed Project, including what Estimation Statistics are used in the board's reports. For example, under the Board Configuration > Estimation Method screen, you will not see Story Point Estimate as an option - only Story Points can be used.

In contrast, team-managed projects use the Story point estimate field for estimation. The reason sprint reports don't look as expected is a mismatch in this estimation field.

Since you can't use the Story points field in a team-managed project, and you can't estimate based on story point estimates on a custom-created board, these two concepts are functionally incompatible. We suggest using the default board created alongside your team-managed project to view reports and estimates, and using the default Story point estimate field to estimate work.

Confirm that story points now display

After switching to the estimation approach above, verify everything is rendering as expected:

  1. Open the board that was automatically created with your team-managed project (not your custom board).

  2. Navigate to Reports.

  3. Confirm that story-point values now display correctly for your issues.

Note: The auto-created team-managed board remains the canonical source for accurate estimation reports in team-managed projects. Custom boards use a different estimation statistic and won't reflect these values, as described above.
