Summary

The Upgrading Jira (manual) documentation recommends creating a new installation directory when performing a manual upgrade for Jira. Is it possible to backup and delete the existing installation directory and use the same physical location?

Environment

Any Jira Server/Data Center instance.

Solution

It is possible to use the same physical location for the upgraded version. It is recommended to create a new install directory to ensure that there is a clean location to install the new version and a fallback option with the existing installation in the event a rollback is necessary.

If the existing installation directory is backed up to a new location, it will be possible to restore it in the case of a rollback. As long as the existing files are cleared out of the Jira install directory prior to extracting the new version, the same installation directory can be used for the upgraded version.
