When the same JQL is recreated as a Filter, the following error might display:

1 Field 'cf[<field ID>]' does not support sorting.

Solution

Update the custom field to use the Free text Searcher Search Template.

  1. Navigate to the cog icon in the top right corner, and select IssuesCustom fields.

2. Filter for the custom field, select the... action menu and selectEdit details.

3. Set Free Text Searcher for Search Template.

4. Contrary to the note at the top of the page, no manual re-indexing is needed. Queues and filters should be able to be sorted using the field without any further action.
