Permission error when editing work item type scheme in Jira Cloud

Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian products on the cloud platform.

Summary

Users are unable to edit a work item type scheme. When trying to remove a work item type from the scheme, the following error appears:

"You do not have the correct permissions to move the issues from project <key> for work item type Task"

Please note: We're in the process of changing from "Issue" to "Work item" to refer to a single piece of work in Jira. You may see either or both of these terms used in your apps while we're rolling out this change.

Solution

Move work items permission is required to remove work item types

When you attempt to remove a work item type from a project's type scheme, this affects existing work items of that type in that project.

To avoid deleting those work items, Jira will try to move them into a new type within the new scheme's list. To do so, Jira first checks the user's permission to move work items. If this permission is missing, the operation to change the type scheme will fail with the error seen above.

Grant Move work items permission to the affected users

As a Jira Administrator, you can correct the permissions of any users who encounter this error:

  1. Navigate to the affected project

  2. Select Project settings > Permissions

  3. Select Actions > Edit permissions

  4. Grant the Move work items permission to any affected users
