Summary

If the group is removed from the Jira user directory in an improper way (disconnecting from LDAP, user/group name changes on LDAP, changing naming on LDAP'etc), then removing the role of this group from Project Settings > User and roles fail. It does not produce any error but after refreshing the page, user/group roles will come back.

Environment

  • Test on 8.20.2

  • Probably valid for more versions

5. Verify that there is no group exists under User Management - Groups with the name "NoMoreExistingGroup"

Cause

While Jira tries to delete the group, it can not find the group in the user directories so it fails to remove it from project roles.

Solution

Add the missing group to the user directory temporarily, remove the roles from Project Settings > User and roles, and then remove the group from the user directory.
