"Need Premium subscription to set parent" error in Jira Cloud

Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian apps on the cloud platform.

Summary

When trying to create a work item and link it to an Epic, the following error appears:

"You need to have Premium subscription to set parent to a work item of this type."

Environment

Jira Cloud on a Standard site subscription

Solution

Custom hierarchies are limited to Premium or Enterprise subscriptions

Under a default hierarchy, Epics are the only work type at the top of the hierarchy. The issue occurs when, in a Standard plan, another work type is at the same level as Epic

Since modifying the hierarchies to include more issue types on the same level as Epics (or higher) is only possible when having a Premium subscription, this indicates that the site had a Premium subscription at some point, and during that time a custom hierarchy was configured to have another work type at the top-level hierarchy.

Now that the site has a Standard subscription, it has lost the ability to configure and use custom hierarchies, but the custom hierarchy was preserved as it was since the Premium subscription, even though it can't be used as such.

Adjust hierarchy levels or change subscription

There are two potential solutions:

  • Remove the additional work type from the same level as Epic. This would make it recognized as a standard work type (meaning an work type that can be created under Epics), and you would then be able to use this work type.

  • Upgrade to Jira Premium. This will enable Custom hierarchies.
