JQL Search Query is not displaying ASC/DESC order properly on custom field

Summary
When searching for custom field number values in ascending order, the sorting appears incorrect.
Environment
Jira Software Data Center on 8.0.0 and any higher version.
Cause
The Search Template value for the affected "Number Field" type custom field is set to "Free text searcher":
Solution
1. Go to ⚙ > Issues > Custom fields.
2. Find the respective field and Edit.
3. Set the Search Template value to Number Searcher if it is a "Number Field" type custom field.
