JIRA Upgrade or Install Fails due to Could not display the GUI Error

Note that this KB was created for the Data Center version of the product. Symptoms
Installing or upgrading JIRA in a Linux environment fails.
The following appears in the console output:

Could not display the GUI. This application needs access to an X Server.
Cause
This error occurs when a 32 bit version of JIRA is installed in a 64 bit OS environment.
Resolution
ℹ️ Please go to www.atlassian.com/software/jira/download and download the 64 bit version for your environment and retry the installation.
