JIRA times out when deleting project

Delete Project operation times out
The following appears in the atlassian-jira.log:

Root cause not found.
Resolution
Backup your $JIRA_HOME/data/attachments/<Project Name>/ directory.
Delete the contents of this directory
Try and delete the project from within JIRA again.
