How to copy from/to Asset field attribute value to/from Jira text custom field using Automation

Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian apps on the cloud platform.

Summary

Copy the value of an Assets Object attribute to/from a Jira text field using the Automation.

Solution

To achieve it, we need to use the Edit Work Item action in the automation flow.

Direction

Automation Edit Work Item

Assets object → Jira text field

se the Assets object attribute smart value, such as the attribute on Test-Assets, to populate the text field.

Jira text field → Assets object field

Use AQL that matches the text value to the target object type and attribute.

Text field → multiple Assets objects

Use AQL with the target object type and attribute and the work item-field value list.

Before configuring your automation flow, confirm that your identifiers match your Assets schema:

  • Assets object attribute name: Matches the exact attribute name in your object type (not the Display Name).

  • Jira text field name: Matches the target custom field on the work item.

  • Target object type: Exists in your Assets schema.

  • AQL attribute name: Matches the schema attribute name used in the query.

Test your AQL query directly in the Assets search box (Assets > select your schema > search bar) to verify that it returns the expected objects before adding it to the Edit Work Item action.

AQL uses the entity Name, not the Display name, verify the object type Attribute settings to confirm the correct syntax. More details at: Using Assets Query Language (AQL) syntax.

Example

Say the Assets object field that stores the Assets objects is called Test-Assets then use the Edit action to populate the text custom field called Custom B. Refer to the smart value to update the text field using the Assets attribute (say: Name) of Test-Assets in the Edit Work Item action:

{{Test-Assets.Name}}

Similarly, to update the Assets field using the Jira text field, you need to use Assets Query Language (AQL) to populate the object in the Assets field. For example, if we need to populate the Assets field "Affected Certificate" from the text field "Test-labels", AQL required would be as below:

objecttype= Certificates AND Name Like {{issue.Test-labels}}

And, to update multiple objects in the Assets field, refer to AQL syntax in the Edit Work Item action to edit the Assets object field:

objecttype= <object-name> AND "<attribute-Name>" in ({{<issue.field.Name>}})
