During a JIRA Evaluation or Early Implementation, CPU Spikes Due to Running on VMWare

Symptoms

Intermittently, CPU will spike to 100% during normal JIRA operations. Performance is occasionally degraded, with no predictable pattern. This can happen after a long time of successful operations, or immediately upon JIRA startup.

The title of the report suggests this can happen during an evaluation, because it's the most common reason for performance issues during the evaluation process. It in no way relates to the evaluation license, which is technically identical to production licenses.

Cause

Virtual environments such as VMWare can cause this.

Resolution

As of September, 2009, JIRA is now supported in Virtual environments. Please review Run Jira server in a virtualized environment for configuration tips.
