Duplicate status during transition on Jira board, transition shows (2)

Summary
When trying to drag a work item to another status on a board, you will see the same status listed more than once, as seen in the following screenshot:

Similarly, on the work item view, the transition menu shows a transition name two separate times, with a (2) next to one of the options.
Remove or de-duplicate workflow transitions
When a workflow contains more than one possible transition into a destination status, Jira will display all of the statuses simultaneously. If these transitions have the same name, they will be displayed with numerical markings to differentiate them.
Go to Project settings > Workflow
Edit the workflow in Diagram mode
Check if the workflow includes multiple transitions into the same status
In our example screenshot, there is a one-way transition between the Waiting and Working statuses, and the workflow allows all statuses to transition into each other:

Option 1: Remove the global transition
If you don't want all statuses to transition to this status, select the destination status label, and uncheck "Allow all statuses to transition to this one" in the window that appears.
Option 2: Remove the specific transition
If you want to retain the ability to transition between any statuses (globally), then you can remove the one-way transitions between each status instead. This leaves only the global transitions for all statuses in the workflow once complete.
Option 3: Rename the transition with duplicated name
If you need to keep both transition types simultaneously, then you'll want to give the specific transition a more descriptive name to avoid confusion in your Jira project.
Switch to the text workflow editor, and rename the transition, removing the (2) and choosing a name that fits the purpose of the transition.
