Summary
When migrating licenses from Jira Software and Jira Service Management license to Data Center, on some Jira versions, this message appears:
The license could not be installed.
This license is a Jira Data Center license and is incompatible with the existing installed license configuration. Please install a Server license. For more information please see License compatibility.
On some other versions, the license update wizard will appear.
This article aims to clarify the difference between these two screens and when they will appear.
Solution
Before Jira 8.10, Jira did not have an implemented wizard that would allow you to migrate Jira Software and Jira Service Management licenses to Data Center at the same time. Instead, administrator would get "The license could not be installed" message, which is covered by the linked article. In that case, the administrator needed to remove one of the Server licenses (Jira Service Management or Software) to have only one license applied before converting the license to Data Center one.
From Jira 8.10 and onward, the license update wizard got implemented, so that the administrator would not need to perform that kind of workaround. Instead, the wizard requires to paste the license key for another product that needs to have its license converted to Data Center.
