Symptoms

I have the request from a user saying they would like to see their preferred name instead of their given name in Jira. Is it possible to change?

Resolution

Yes, it is possible to change the display name attribute in Jira. For example, you already have these 2 attributes in your LDAP for a particular user:

displayName= Fernanda Gomes

preferredName= Fefe

You want Jira to show the preferredName value instead of the user's display name, you would have to follow these steps:

  1. Go to Jira console, Admin >> User Management >> Directories

  2. Edit the configuration for LDAP Directory, look for the User Display Name Attribute under User Schema Settings

  3. Change the attribute to preferredName

  4. Click Save and Test, then Synchronize

PS: This will take effect to ALL users being synchronized, so, if one user does not have anything in their preferredName's attribute, Jira will show FirstName + LastName instead. For example:
