Can't see existing project to share settings when creating a Jira project

Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian products on the cloud platform.

Summary

When creating a project with the "Share settings with an existing project" option, the base project is not listed when searching to select the project as a template.

Solution

Assign Administrator permission to the original project for the affected user

The user creating the new project must have Administrator permission for the base project that is serving as a template and copying settings.

  1. Go to the templated (base) project

  2. Visit Project Settings > People

  3. Add the user who is creating a new project to the Administrator role

Even if the affected user is a Jira Administrator, they will still need Administrator permissions for the specific base project they are trying to share settings with.

Setting their permissions on the base project will allow them to find the base project in the project creation tool.
