Cannot edit work item type in Jira Cloud project

Summary

Users are unable to edit an work items type, and they see the warning message

"You cannot edit this work item type in this project."

Solution

Common causes

There are two main causes for this message to appear.

1. The user doesn't have the Edit Work Items permission in the project

2. The field Work Item Type is missing from the Edit/View screen used for this work item type

Grant Edit Issues permission to the affected user(s)

As a Jira administrator:

1. Go to the affected project and choose Project settings

2. Select Permissions

3. Click on Actions and then Edit permissions

4. Next to the Edit Work Items permission, select Update and add the relevant user, project role, or group

Add the Work Item Type field to the screen used to edit or view the issue

As a Jira administrator:

1. Visit the affected project and select Project settings

2. Select Work Items > Screens

3. Open the screen scheme that contains the work item type with the problem

4. Select the screen used to Edit and/or View work items

   1. Usually, this is a single screen for both actions

5. Scroll to the bottom, and use the Select field dropdown to add the Work Item Type field to the screen

6. Repeat steps three to five if the problem appears on multiple work item types
