Cannot complete sprint due to read-only workflow in Jira Software Cloud

Platform Notice: Cloud Only - This article only applies to Atlassian apps on the cloud platform.

Summary

Learn how to resolve sprint completion errors caused by read-only workflows in Jira Software Cloud.

When you try to complete a sprint, you may see this error:

Failed to complete sprint

This issue cannot be edited because of its workflow status.

This happens if any issue in the sprint uses a workflow that is marked as read-only. Jira cannot update these issues, so it blocks sprint completion.

Solution

You can resolve this error using one of the following options:

Option 1: Remove affected issues from the sprint

Use this option if you need to close the current sprint immediately.

  1. Identify all issues in the sprint that use a read-only workflow.

  2. For each issue:

    • Open the issue and clear or change its sprint field, or

    • Move the issue to the backlog from the board.

  3. After removing all affected issues, try to complete the sprint again.

Option 2: Create and associate a new editable workflow

Use this option to prevent future sprints from failing due to read-only workflows.

  1. In your project, select Project settings > Workflows.

  2. Find the read-only workflow associated with the affected issue types.

  3. Copy or clone the workflow to create a new editable workflow with the same statuses and transitions.

  4. Associate the new workflow with the same issue types.

  5. Review and confirm status mappings as needed.

  6. Publish the updated workflow scheme.

  7. Try to complete the sprint again.

Once all issues use an editable workflow, Jira will allow you to complete the sprint.
