'Team Spend per Point' widget shows 0 in the Jira Align 'Spend per Point Report'

Summary

After opening the Spend per Point Report in Jira Align by:

  1. Going to Portfolio > choose portfolio > Reports > Spend per Point Report

  2. Identifying the row for team of interest and clicking the link at end of that team's Row

  3. In the left side-bar, choosing the desired Program Increment (PI)

  4. Choosing the desired Sprint in the dropdown (located next to the Team)

The Team Spend Per Point Report is displayed with the Team Spend per Point showing a value of $0

The calculation details are shown in the below table - with the calculation for Team Cost per Sprint in the first row, depending on the result of the calculation defined in the second row.

Team Spend per Point

(Team Cost per Sprint) / (Sum of effort points from stories accepted in the sprint)

Team Spend per Point is a value unique to each sprint.

Team Cost per Sprint

(Also known as Team Spend per Sprint)

Sum of:

(Team member’s allocation percentage) * (Burn hours set in team’s Details panel) * (PI Blended Rate or Cost Center Rate) * (Number of days in sprint)

For each team member. This value is stored on the last day of the sprint.

  • Expanding the Cost section shows there is an Outlier of "The PI blended rate has not yet been set."

  • Clicking Manage Sprint Membership (orange arrow in above image) does open the Members tab of the Sprint and confirms that the sprint in question has Users with Allocation Percentages configured as members

    • Checking the General Tab of the Sprint and expanding the Full Details section does confirm that Burn Hours have been set

  • Clicking Manage Blended Rate (green arrow in above image) does open the details of the PI, where expanding the Full Details section, of the PI, conforms that a Blended rate is set

  • There are Accepted Stories, linked to the Sprint, that have Effort Points set

Cause

As per the content of our Help article, Manage data for financial calculations, Jira Align baselines certain pieces of data so that historical costs are maintained.

The article itself contains the following statement:

"As you make progress over the course of multiple sprints and program increments, certain data is baselined, or stored, in order to preserve the historical cost of a team, sprint, or work item"

If the Baseline is set when one or more of required values has not yet been configured, then this can result in a 0 value being calculated for Team Spend per Point

Solution

Check that the Calculation Requirements have been met

As misconfiguring the settings needed to complete the Team Spend per Point Calculation can also cause a 0 result, check these requirements have been met (correcting any that are missing or invalid)

  1. Check what the Costing Method is set to in Jira Align > Settings > Platform > Portfolio Specific Configuration (button near bottom right) > choose portfolio

  2. If the Costing Method is Blended Rate, check the details of the PI to confirm a Blended Rate value is set

  3. If the Costing Method is Cost Center, check that details of the Cost Centre does have an Hourly Rate configured

  4. Check that the Team details does have Burn Hours set

  5. Check that Sprint does have members added with Percentage Allocations

  6. Check that the Sprint does have associated, accepted stories with Effort Points set in them

Re-baseline the data

  1. Check the details of the sprint selected in the report and identify the Sprint Anchor (Sync Date) for that sprint

  2. Open the details of the PI associated to that sprint and click in the Sync Sprint tab

  3. Scroll to the bottom and find the anchor row that matches the one identified in Step 1

  4. Click the gear symbol at the end of that row

  5. Locate the row for the Team (that was selected in the report) and check the box at the start of the team row

  6. Then scroll to the bottom and click the button called 'Reset Cost Rates' followed by Continue - a pop up message will be briefly seen that suggests waiting 30 minutes

  7. Wait at least 30 minutes

After re-baselining the data, reopen/refresh the Team Spend per Point Report.
