Story Details Panel shows a warning: The associated Jira project isn't mapped to the assigned Jira Align program.

Environment

Jira Align

Diagnosis

The following warning appears in stories:

⚠ We couldn't sync this work item with Jira. The associated Jira project isn't mapped to the assigned Jira Align program. Contact your Jira Align Administrator for more assistance.

(Auto-migrated image: description temporarily unavailable)

Recent changes have occurred to the story's program (like moving the story between projects in Jira), parent feature's program in Jira Align or Jira, or changes to Jira Align - Jira project mapping.

Cause

Jira Align checks that the mapping table for Jira Projects contains an entry that should correspond to the values of the story itself:

  • Jira Project Key

  • Connector ID

  • Assigned Program

It's possible to misalign these by:

  • Changing the Jira Align - Jira project mapping for either the story or its parent feature

  • Moving the story between projects in Jira

  • Changing parent feature's program in Jira Align or moving it to a different project in Jira

An update to a Jira Align story triggers a sync to Jira. However, the sync fails if the story's program doesn't match the Jira project in the Jira Align - Jira Project mapping. Additionally, during updates, stories may inherit their parent feature's program, which can create misalignment if different from the story's original program.

Solution

There are 2 main fixes for stories with this warning:

Fix for the misaligned items

Child story Jira project mapping doesn't correspond to the program it's inheriting from the parent feature.

To fix this, make sure the story Jira Project and the parent feature Jira Project are mapped to the same Program. So either:

  • Move the story or feature in Jira to the correct project that's mapped to the same program in Jira Align, then make a small update to the story in Jira Align

OR

  • Verify the project-program mappings in Jira Align, for both stories and features, and make sure they have a common program

Fix for the aligned but not updated items

The parent feature’s program is correct but didn’t update in the story. To fix this:

  • Fix any Misaligned items issues (mentioned above) first

  • Once the Misaligned Items issues have been addressed, apply a minor update to the stories via UI or API on the Jira Align side, such as updating the description or tags. This will set the correct parent program in the Jira Align story, and allow the successful sync of the story to Jira as valid Program to Project mappings now exist.
