Summary

The number of Portfolio Epics is different when viewed through Backlog vs the 'Work In Progress by State' report, even when the same filter is applied.

Solution

Reports and Backlogs have different logic and requirements for display. Therefore, it is expected for these to show different data.

  • Reports have business rules in place that define how the data is displayed. In the case of 'Work In Progress by State', this report starts from the Story level (those that are in progress) and rolls up to the parent work item level. This means that if an Epic has no Stories in progress, then there will be no “work in progress” for that Epic in the selected PI. Therefore, the Epic will not be displayed in this report.

  • Backlog is a simple list of work items with no business rules required for display.
