Summary
When Jira Sprints synchronizes to Jira Align Team Sprints, the Jira Connector will either make a new Team Sprint in Jira Align. or use an existing sprint. This article discusses how to base the names of the Jira Align Team Sprints on the Jira Sprint names.
Environment
Jira Align
Solution
Pre-requisites
The Jira Project is already mapped to a Jira Align Program
The Jira Boards are already mapped to Jira Align Teams
Valid Program Increments are linked to the Program
The Program Increments have suitable Sprint Anchors defined
Solution Details
Change the setting of Sync Sprint Names from Jira in the connector settings (Jira Align > Settings > Jira Settings > Jira Setup) so that it is enabled, set to Yes
Solution Effects
If Sync Sprint Names from Jira is enabled, set to Yes
Creation of a new Jira Sprint, where the matching Jira Align Sprint Anchor is not already linked to a Team Sprint will result in a new Team Sprint being created using the name format of
"Team Name - Jira Sprint Name"
Creation of a new Jira Sprint, where the matching Jira Align Sprint Anchor is already linked to a Team Sprint will result in the existing Team Sprint being renamed, using the above format
Team Sprints that were mapped to Jira Sprints and existed before the setting was enabled, will be renamed, to the above format, during a future sync operation
If SyncSprint Names from Jira is disabled, set to No
Creation of a new Jira Sprint, where the matching Jira Align Sprint Anchor is not already linked to a Team Sprint will result in a new Team Sprint being created using the name format of
"Team Name - Jira Align Sprint Anchor Name"
Creation of a new Jira Sprint, where the matching Jira Align Sprint Anchor is already linked to a Team Sprint will leave the existing name on the Team Sprint, it will not be renamed
If the setting is changed from enabled to disabled then the names of existing sprints will remain as currently set, no renames will take place.
ℹ️This setting only affects the name of the Team Sprints in Jira Align, the names of the Sprint Anchors will remain as set in the Sync Sprints tab of your Program Increment(s). Sprint Anchor names can be manually changed after the anchors have been created
ℹ️ If there is a requirement to exactly match the Jira Sprint names to the Jira Align Team Sprint names (so not include the Team Name part), then you will need to disable the setting and then manually correct the sprint names as the automation has to include the team names to avoid duplicate sprint names being created in Jira Align.
⚠️ If Sync Sprint Names from Jira is enabled, then changes of sprint dates in Jira can cause duplicate sprints to be created in Jira Align, for more details on this please review How does changing the Sprint dates in Jira affect Jira Align?
ℹ️ If using the option (found inside a Program Increment) to Generate Team Sprints to create Team Sprints in Jira Align instead of letting the connector do it, then the created sprints will be initially named with the naming convention of "PI-Name Team-Sprint-Prefix Sprint-Anchor-Name" - if Sync Sprint Names from Jira is enabled this name will be corrected during the next sync from Jira.
