Summary

To connect a feature to a product, there are some pre-requisite configuration steps. This article covers the requirements and explains the symptoms that may be seen when creating or updating a feature

Environment

Jira Align

Solution

Providing a Product field in a Jira Align feature is controlled by the Manage Products setting, This setting can be found in two locations:

  1. Settings > Platform > Team (tab) > Manage Products

This controls if a newly created Portfolio has Manage Products enabled in the Portfolio Specific Configuration (so controls the default for a new portfolio).

  2. Settings > Platform > Portfolio Specific Configuration (Button) > {choose Portfolio} > Manage Products

This controls if features under a specific portfolio (via the program of the feature) contain the Product field. This MUST be set to Yes for the applicable portfolio for the field to be visible in features.

Once the Product field is enabled in a feature, then it is a required field and cannot be set to optional.

In addition to the primary behavior mentioned above, the combination of the settings in the two locations also shows some secondary, on-screen, behavior as follows:

  • If both are set to No, then the Product field does not appear when creating (or updating) a feature.

  • If Team (tab) > Manage Products is set to Yes and Portfolio Specific Configuration > Manage Products is set to No, then the Product field is visible when creating a feature but the Product field will disappear as soon as a Program (that is within a portfolio that is set to No) is chosen

  • If Team (tab) > Manage Products is set to No and Portfolio Specific Configuration > Manage Products is set to Yes, then the Product field is not visible when creating a feature until a program (that is within a portfolio that is set to Yes) is chosen

  • If both are set to Yes, then the Product field is always visible when creating (or updating) a feature.

  • If changing the program for an existing feature, then the Product field may appear or disappear depending on the Manage Products setting for the portfolio of the program being selected.

Settings > Platform > Team (tab) > Manage Products

Settings > Platform > Portfolio Specific Configuration (Button) > {choose Portfolio} > Manage Products
