Fetch Epic CustomField Value and ID in Jira Align

Summary

Use the Jira Align REST API to find custom field IDs and values. This metadata is essential when you need to automate patching or update work items via the API

Solution

To retrieve the complete list of custom field options and their corresponding IDs, follow this two-step process using the REST API.

Step 1: Retrieve Field Metadata (Allowed Values and IDs)

Use the editmeta endpoint for the specific work item type (e.g., Epics). This returns the schema for all custom fields, including the allowedValues array which contains the id and value for each option.

Endpoint: GET /rest/align/api/2/Epics/<ID>/editmeta

(Note: Replace <ID> with any valid Epic ID in your instance)

Example Response Snippet:

{ "customFields": [ { "customfield_90688": { "required": false, "name": "Custom Field Select List 1 - Priority", "allowedValues": [ { "id": 57, "value": "L0" }, { "id": 387, "value": "L1" } ], "schema": { "type": "option", "customId": 90688 }, "key": "customfield_90688" } } ] }

Step 2: Retrieve Currently Assigned Values

To see which specific value is currently assigned to an Epic, perform a standard GET request on the Epic.

Endpoint: GET /rest/align/api/2/Epics/<ID>

Example Response Snippet:

{ "id": 9603, "title": "Example Test Epic", "createDate": "2026-03-19T17:41:27.733Z", "ownerId": "123456", "customFields": [ { "customfield_90688": [ { "id": 387, "fieldName": "Custom Field Select List 1 - Priority", "value": "L1" } ] } ] }
