Summary

The Column View of the Feature Backlog is showing empty for both the Estimated PI Load and Estimated Program PI Load (percentage) bars.

The two bars are found by going to:

Program > Backlog > Viewing: Feature Backlog / Kanban > Column View > Estimated

Note: information about the two percentage bars and the differences between Estimated and Actual can be found in:

Environment

Jira Align

Diagnosis

Hovering the mouse over either bar displays the pop-up message shown below

(Auto-migrated image: description temporarily unavailable)
(Auto-migrated image: description temporarily unavailable)

The reference to estimation conversions in the pop-up relates to whether your estimation system is set to Points, Team / Member Weeks or T-Shirts (which in turn controls what field is displayed in the Features)

The values in the bars are calculated using the following equation:

Estimated PI(Program Increment) Load = ((Sum of Estimate points from the related Features / (Program's PI Velocity)) * 100

Where:

  • the Estimate Points from the Features are as set in the Points, Team / Member Weeks or T-Shirt field of each feature

    • Points are directly used, Team / Member Weeks or T-Shirts are changed into points using your conversion settings

  • The program’s PI Velocity = the average number of level-of-effort (LOE) points accepted in the previous two PIs

(Auto-migrated image: description temporarily unavailable)

The Program’s PI Velocity can be manually set using the Override option, this can be useful when there are no previous PIs or when you want to define a fixed velocity instead of having Jira Align automatically recalculate it on a rolling basis.

Cause

If either the Estimate Points in the Features or the Program PI Velocity are 0 then the bars will be empty ( 0%)

Solution

  • Check that the Features linked to the Program and PI(Program Increment) have values set in their Points, Team / Member Weeks or T-Shirt field (only one of these fields will be seen in a given configuration)

  • Check that the child Stories under features in (in the previous 2 PIs) have Effort Points set and that some or all of those stories are set to Accepted.

  • Check that the Previous 2 PIs have their Status set to Done

  • (Optional) check that the heading for the PI in the Feature Backlog > List view shows values (other than 0) for Program PI Velocity and Feature Estimate (it should do so if the above points have been checked)
