Startup check: Confluence data version too low to be upgraded

Note that this KB was created for the Data Center version of the product. Data Center KBs for non-Data-Center-specific features may also work for Server versions of the product, however they have not been tested. Support for Server* products ended on February 15th 2024. When a new version of Confluence is released, it is sometimes necessary for Confluence to convert older data to a newer format. This is done by a series of 'upgrade tasks' which Confluence runs on the data.

Newer versions of Confluence don't always contain all the upgrade tasks needed to convert data from the very oldest versions of Confluence, so sometimes upgrades from very old versions must be performed in several stages. Exact changes between older, non-supported versions and current versions aren't always documented.

If you're upgrading Confluence and plan on jumping several versions, you should always read the release and upgrade notes to help you plan your upgrade. Depending on your configuration, you may need to upgrade to interim versions to ensure your upgrade is as smooth as possible. You should also check the relevant supported platforms. We add and remove support for platforms as we progress, so for example, your current database may not be supported in a newer version.

Recommended upgrade path to Confluence 9

2.7 or earlier

Upgrade to 2.7.4 then upgrade to 3.5.17, and follow paths below.

2.8 to 3.4

Upgrade to 3.5.17, and follow paths below.

3.5

Upgrade to 5.0.3, and follow paths below.

4.0 to 4.3

Upgrade to 5.10.x, and follow paths below.

5.0 to 7.1

Upgrade to 7.19.x, and follow paths below.

7.2.x to 9.x

Upgrade directly to the latest version of Confluence 9.

Confluence 9 is a major upgrade

Be sure to check the Confluence Upgrade Matrix, take a full backup, and test your upgrade in a non-production environment before upgrading your production site.
