"Home is not configured properly" error message due to corrupted confluence.cfg.xml

Note that this KB was created for the Data Center version of the product. Symptoms

The following appears in the atlassian-confluence.log:

1 2 3 ERROR [main] [atlassian.config.bootstrap.DefaultAtlassianBootstrapManager] init Home is not configured properly: com.atlassian.config.ConfigurationException: Failed to parse config file: Error on line 34 of document : The markup in the document following the root element must be well-formed. Nested exception: The markup in the document following the root element must be well-formed. ERROR [main] [atlassian.confluence.setup.ConfluenceConfigurationListener] contextInitialized An error was encountered while bootstrapping Confluence (see below): Unable to bootstrap application: Failed to parse config file: Error on line 34 of document : The markup in the document following the root element must be well-formed. Nested exception: The markup in the document following the root element must be well-formed.

Cause

The Confluence.cfg.xml file is probably corrupted and malformed.

Resolution

Restore the file to the last known working state.
