Problem

When attempting to upgrade Confluence using the installer, the upgrade fails and the following error (or similar) appears in atlassian-confluence.log for the stats.properties file:

1 java.io.FileNotFoundException: /opt/atlassian-confluence-6.3.1/atlassian-confluence-x.x.x-x64.bin.xxxx.dir/stats.properties (No such file or directory)

Cause

This error occurs when the installer is placed inside the Confluence installation directory. When the installer runs, it creates a new directory called atlassian-confluence-x.x.x-x64.bin.xxxx.dir in the same directory as the installer, then removes the existing installation directory. If the installer is located within the installation directory, this new directory will be be removed as soon as it is created.

Resolution

If the error above is in the logs, there's a good chance the Confluence installation directory has been removed. Roll back to a backup taken before the upgrade, then run the upgrade again with the installer outside of the Confluence installation directory.
