Emoticons not appearing correctly in Confluence

Symptoms

Instead of images, Confluence is displaying raw HTML.

Cause

XXS protection for plugins is enabled by default. This is a way of preventing plugins from inserting arbitrary HTML into a Confluence page.

Resolution

  1. Visit Confluence Admin > Security Configuration

  2. Click Edit at the bottom of the page

  3. Uncheck "XXS protection for Plugins"

  4. Save the page
